Anxiety is a common yet serious mental health condition characterized by persistent and intense feelings of worry. Usually, the worry is out of proportion as compared to the situation at hand. Anxiety can have a significant impact on many aspects of a person's life, including sleep, making it difficult to focus on tasks, enjoy social interactions, or relax. Anxiety can also keep a person stuck in a spiral of negative thoughts, leading them to feel overwhelmed.
In fact, insomnia and other sleep disturbances are common in anxiety disorders and other anxiety-related conditions. The constant chatter of thoughts during bedtime can make sleep a challenging experience. While therapy and medications are usually the best ways to cope with anxiety, affirmations are a powerful self-help way to cope with anxiety and bedtime worries. In this article, we'll discuss how affirmations, including spiritual ones, can help people cope with anxiety and bedtime anxiety.
Understanding Anxiety and Sleep
Anxiety can have a lasting impact on a person's sleep. Excessive worry, intrusive thoughts and rumination can make it hard for people to relax and fall asleep during bedtime. Anxiety can even cause people to wake up in the middle of the night. Over time, people can also find themselves stuck in a cycle where anxiety causes a lack of sleep and the lack of sleep aggravates anxiety.
How Do Affirmations Help With Anxiety and Sleep?
In simple terms, affirmations are short, positive statements that people can say aloud or repeat in their minds. These positive statements can help people change the way they think about themselves, others or life. Thus, positive affirmations can help counter negative thoughts and build confidence. Affirmations can impact and change negative thought patterns over time.
Benefits of Affirmations for Anxiety
- Anxiety is marked and sustained by negative thoughts when practiced consistently. Affirmations break this cycle of negative and fear-based thoughts that drive anxiety
- It's proven that positive affirmations can trigger the reward systems in the brain, leading to a feeling of hope and satisfaction
- Anxiety often stems from fear and self-doubt. Positive affirmations such as 'I trust myself' can help boost confidence and build trust in oneself
- When practised consistently, affirmations can help improve mood, resulting in reduced anxiety.
Benefits of Affirmations for Sleep
Some benefits of repeating affirmations before bedtime are:
- Bedtime affirmations can act as a counter to anxiety-provoking, negative thoughts. By repeating positive statements, people can redirect attention away from negative thoughts and focus on more calming thoughts
- Bedtime affirmations can help boost self-confidence and enhance self-esteem. Increased self-esteem contributes to a reduction in anxious thoughts.
- Affirmations can help people be in the present moment. Being in the present can reduce anxious thoughts and promote relaxation.

Do Affirmations Actually Work?
Research suggests that incorporating positive affirmations into bedtime routines can positively impact sleep quality. A study in the Journal of Sleep Psychology revealed that individuals who practised positive affirmations experienced enhanced overall sleep quality. In another study, it was found that practising positive affirmations can reduce the time that one takes to fall asleep. Thus, affirmations are effective for sleep.
Research also suggests that practising affirmations consistently, even for a span of 3 to 4 days can reduce feelings of anxiety and worry. A study conducted in 2016 on patients with anxiety disorder found that replacing thoughts of worry with positive images or verbal affirmations is effective in reducing worry and symptoms of anxiety even in a short span of one week, suggesting that positive affirmations can indeed be effective for anxiety.
How To Practice Affirmations
A few ways to incorporate affirmations into your routine are:
- Keep affirmations in short and simple sentences as they will be easy to remember
- Start all your affirmations with 'I' to make them more personal
- Pick a calm place to repeat affirmations
- Combine affirmations with deep breathing and visualize yourself in a peaceful state for better results
- Always say affirmations in the present tense for them to be effective. For ex- Say, 'I am safe', instead of saying, 'I will be safe'.
- Keep a limited number of affirmations, repeating too many affirmations can cause confusion
- Be patient and consistent with affirmations. Set some time in the morning and before bed when you practice affirmations. Don't wait for anxious moments to use them. Regular practice will make them easily available during stress and anxiety.
Conclusion
Affirmations, whether spiritual or bedtime-focused, are a quick and effective way to alter thought processes, combat negative thoughts, and restore a sense of peace and calm. Many people may find affirmations useful, but they may not work for everyone. It is important to remember that affirmations can help you feel motivated and confident, but they are only one part of the change. We need to keep taking positive actions to sustain the effects of affirmations. It is also important to remember that affirmations are not a substitute for treatment, and severe anxiety may require therapy and medications.
